Alexis Weissenberg

A French pianist of Bulgarian origin. He studied piano and composition from an early age in his hometown of Sofia. Because he was Jewish, he was briefly imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II, but escaped to Israel and began performing. Immediately after the war, he traveled to the United States and studied under Olga Samarov at the Juilliard School. In 1947, he attracted attention by performing with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of G. Szell. He took a hiatus from performing for about ten years from the mid-1950s, but returned in Paris in 1966.

ブルガリア出身のフランスのピアニスト。生地ソフィアで幼時からピアノと作曲を学ぶ。ユダヤ系であるため，第2次大戦中，一時ナチスの強制収容所に入れられたが，イスラエルに逃れ演奏活動を開始。終戦直後アメリカに渡り，ジュリアード音楽学校でオルガ･サマロフに師事する。1947年G.セル指揮のニューヨーク･フィルハーモニー管弦楽団との共演によって注目された。50年代半ばから約10年間演奏活動を休止していたが，66年パリで復帰する。
