1929‐ A French pianist of Bulgarian origin. He studied piano and composition from an early age in his hometown of Sofia. Because he was Jewish, he was briefly imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II, but escaped to Israel and began performing. Immediately after the war, he traveled to the United States and studied under Olga Samarov at the Juilliard School. In 1947, he attracted attention by performing with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of G. Szell. He took a hiatus from performing for about ten years from the mid-1950s, but returned in Paris in 1966. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
