Lake Ashi - Ashinoko

Japanese:
Lake Ashi - Ashinoko

A lake in Hakone-machi, southwest of Kanagawa Prefecture. It is part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and can be said to be the center of the Hakone scenic beauty. It is a gourd-shaped lake in the crater of the Hakone volcano, and is wider in the south. It has a circumference of 18 kilometers, an area of 6.8 square kilometers, a maximum depth of 40.6 meters, and an elevation of 725 meters above sea level. The water is a light blue color and used to be very clear, but in recent years it has become smaller near Motohakone where tourism development has progressed. The view of Mt. Fuji from Lake Ashi is said to be the most scenic in Japan. Since ancient times, it has been the Mitarashi Pond of Hakone Gongen (Hakone Shrine), and was used as a place of purification for festivals and other events, and was also part of the shrine grounds. Between 1666 and 1670 (Kanbun 6-10), the Fukara Irrigation Canal (Hakone Irrigation Canal; 1.3 km long tunnel) was dug under Kojiri Pass to send irrigation water to the western slope of the somma volcano (Kise River basin). Since then, the water rights of Lake Ashi have belonged to the Shizuoka Prefecture Water Users Association, and the local town of Hakone has been restricted from freely using the lake water, making coordination between the water rights holders and the local community a major issue. Black bass, native to North America, were released into the lake in 1925 (Taisho 14), and have become a local specialty, and you can also enjoy fishing for crucian carp, yamabe, rainbow trout, and other fish. Regular sightseeing boats run between Hakone, Motohakone, Hakone-en, and Kojiri.
