A fortified town in the Gard department in southeastern France since the Middle Ages. Population 4,100 (1982). It is about 30 km south of Nîmes and close to the Mediterranean Sea. Aigues-Mortes means "dead waters" and is named after the inland waters of a lagoon that connects the Camargue region to the east. In 1240, Capetian King Louis IX (Saint Louis) purchased the land and had a castle built. At the time, Louis' sphere of influence was in northern France, and he lacked a foothold on the Mediterranean Sea, so he considered the area important as a base.
