Irago Strait

Japanese: 伊良湖水道 - いらごすいどう
Irago Strait

It is a 4.4 km long strait between Cape Irago at the tip of the Atsumi Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture and Kamishima in Mie Prefecture, and forms the mouth of Ise Bay. Commonly known as "Irago Crossing," it is known as a difficult place for ships to navigate due to fast currents and reefs. The width of the passage for large ships is only 1,200 meters between Asahi Sho near Cape Irago and Maruyama Dashi near Kamishima, and navigation is restricted for huge ships over 200 meters in length. In 1973, it was designated as a narrow channel, and there is a ship traffic signal station on the cliff of Cape Irago Lighthouse.
