One of the islands in the Kutsuna Islands in the Seto Inland Sea. It belongs to Nakajima Town, Onsen District, Ehime Prefecture. It is located between Nogutsuna Island and Nakajima Island, with an area of 3.5 km2 and a population of 473 (1995). The southern part of the island is in a bay, where a settlement and port are located. It is said to have been developed towards the end of the 11th century, and in the early modern period it served as the maritime commander of the Ozu Domain. Along with Nogutsuna Island to the east, it was a thriving trading centre for cloth peddlers across the country from the Taisho to the early Showa periods, but today it is primarily cultivated for citrus fruits. At Umenokohana, which juts out from the northeastern end of the island, are the ruins of Umenoko Castle, said to have been the base of the Kutsuna clan.
