In the Middle Ages, the Lombardy League of Northern Italian cities formed a coalition against the expansion of the Holy Roman Emperor's power. It began in 1167 and grew to 31 cities by 1173. In 1176, the Lombard League defeated the forces of Emperor Frederick I at the Battle of Legnano. In 1183, the Treaty of Constance recognized the emperor's formal suzerainty in exchange for regaining autonomy. It was re-formed in 1226 and continued to oppose Frederick II. → Related article Guelph | Cities Alliance Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
