Mexican socialist and labor activist. Born into a middle-class family, he became involved in labor education while in college and then devoted himself to the labor movement. He rose to prominence after the Great Depression, forming the National Committee for the Defense of the Proletariat (1935) and the Mexican Workers' Confederation (1936), and actively supported Cárdenas's reform politics. His support was based on his theory of "staged revolution," which argued that Mexico was still in a slump, semi-colonial and semi-feudal state, and that national liberation was necessary before a proletarian revolution, and therefore that the immediate task was to complete the bourgeois-democratic revolution that began with the 1910 revolution.

メキシコの社会主義者，労働運動家。中産階級の家庭に生まれ，大学在学中に労働者教育に携わって以来，労働運動に身を投ずる。世界恐慌以後頭角を現し，プロレタリア防衛全国委員会(1935)，メキシコ労働者連合(1936)を結成し，カルデナスの改革政治を積極的に支援した。その支援は，メキシコがいまだ半植民地，半封建制で低迷しており，プロレタリア革命よりもまず民族解放が必要であり，したがって1910年革命に始まるブルジョア民主主義革命の完遂こそ当面の課題だとする〈段階革命論〉に基づくものであった。
