1894‐1968 Mexican socialist and labor activist. Born into a middle-class family, he became involved in labor education while in college and then devoted himself to the labor movement. He rose to prominence after the Great Depression, forming the National Committee for the Defense of the Proletariat (1935) and the Mexican Workers' Confederation (1936), and actively supported Cárdenas's reform politics. His support was based on his theory of "staged revolution," which argued that Mexico was still in a slump, semi-colonial and semi-feudal state, and that national liberation was necessary before a proletarian revolution, and therefore that the immediate task was to complete the bourgeois-democratic revolution that began with the 1910 revolution.
