〘Noun〙① An evergreen tall tree of the Thymelaeaceae family. It is found from India to Southeast Asia. The trunk can reach a height of 20 meters. The leaves are oblong , 5-7 cm long, and pointed at the end. The flowers are bell-shaped with a deep lobe and are white. The fruit is oval, about 5 cm long, and splits into two when ripe. 〘名〙① ジンチョウゲ科の常緑高木。インドから東南アジアに分布する。幹は高さ二〇メートルにも達する。葉は長さ五～七センチメートルの長楕円(だえん)形で先は尾状にとがる。花は先が深裂した鐘形で白色。果実は長さ約五センチメートルの楕円状で、熟すと二裂する。材は香木として珍重され、インドでは薬用にもする。じん。〔十巻本和名抄（934頃）〕② ①から採取した天然香料。樹幹に真菌が侵入し、その菌糸に対抗して分泌された成分が香料となる。特に光沢のある黒色の優良品を伽羅(きゃら)という。※大安寺伽藍縁起并流記資財帳‐天平一九年（747）「合沉香伍拾玖斤壱拾伍両」〔晉書‐王敦伝〕
