Born: 11 December 1801, Detmold Died: September 12, 1836, Detmold German playwright. He studied law in Leipzig and Berlin, and later returned to his hometown to become a lawyer, but lost his job due to his drinking habit and unhappy marriage, and died in poverty at the age of 34. He consistently pursued the tragic nature of historical heroes being defeated by reality. He excelled in depicting crowds, and was the final play of the Sturm und Drang movement and a pioneer of Expressionism. His major works include Herzog Theodor von Gothland (1827), Don Juan und Faust (29), and Napoleon oder Die hundert Tage (31).
