Republic of Transvaal

One of the Boer republics before the Union of South Africa was established in 1910. Its official name is the Republic of South Africa. It is now known as the Transvaal Province in the northeastern part of South Africa. As a result of the Boer people's great inland migration (Great Trek) that began in 1835, an autonomous Boer state was established north of the Vaal River. The British government recognized this through the Sand River Agreement in 1852, and M. Pretorius became the first president. With no access to the sea, the country's finances were strained and it lacked political stability.
