...Then, thanks to the help of geologist Lyell and botanist JD Hooker, some of Darwin's unpublished papers and a letter to American botanist A. Gray were presented at the Linnean Society in London along with Wallace's paper, and the theory of natural selection was first introduced to the public (1858). Meanwhile, Darwin began to summarize his magnum opus, Natural Selection, and published On the Origin of Species (1859), which became a classic in evolutionary theory, but Natural Selection was left unfinished, and the first part of it became Variation in Domestic Animals and Cultivated Plants (1868). The remaining part was not published until 1975, nearly 100 years after his death.
