Kiryu Textiles - Kiryu Textiles

A general term for textiles produced in and around Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture. Today, Kiryu is famous as a comprehensive textile production area along with Nishijin in Kyoto, but its development began in 1600 (Keicho 5), when silk was presented as a flag for the Tokugawa side at the Battle of Sekigahara. Then, during the Genbun era (1736-1741), Yabei and Kichibei brought takahata looms from Nishijin, and the area saw rapid development. After Iwase Kichibei invented the twisting eight-claw wheel for tightly twisting yarn in 1783 (Tenmei 3), crepe and the representative product, omeshi, began to be woven. The introduction of modern technology led to further development, with the purchase of a power loom in 1872 (Meiji 5) and a jacquard loom in 1877 from Nishijin. Even after the Second World War, the company continued to actively produce a variety of items, including machine embroidery, for export, and continues to do so to this day.
