Phenols are called monohydric, dihydric, or trihydric phenols depending on the number of hydroxyl groups, and phenols with two or more hydroxyl groups are collectively called polyhydric phenols (or polyphenols). Phenols are found in coal tar and crude petroleum, as well as in plant essential oils (for example, carvacrol, thymol, and catechol).
