urban ecology

[Cities and Nature]
Urban ecology considers cities not simply administrative units, but a system that includes the residents and living organisms of urbanized areas, as well as the surrounding non-living natural environment such as the air, water, and soil, and calls this an urban ecosystem. The concept of ecosystem was originally proposed to refer to units of nature with distinctive physical features, such as forests, grasslands, and tundra, which represent both biotic and non-biological nature, but it came to be called urban ecosystems by analogy with these.
