The largest lake in South America, located in northwestern Venezuela. It is connected to the Gulf of Venezuela in the Caribbean Sea by a shallow channel. Its area is 13,010 km2 . Its maximum depth is about 60 m. There are abundant oil fields on the shore and at the bottom of the lake, and full-scale mining began in 1918.
