Onishi - Onishi

The former name of a town (Onishi-machi) was in Tano-gun, in the southwest of Gunma Prefecture. The area now occupies the southern part of Fujioka City. The former Onishi-machi was incorporated as a town in 1889 (Meiji 22). In 1954 (Showa 29), it merged with Sanbagawa Village and Mihara Village. In 2006 (Heisei 18), it was incorporated into Fujioka City. A typical valley-mouth settlement on the Kanna River, it developed as a market town dealing in cocoons and roofing boards, with market days on the 3rd and 8th of each month. National Route 462 runs from the east to the south. The main industry is agriculture, and the town produces rice, wheat, and konjac yams, as well as vegetables and shiitake mushrooms. The town is known for its Sanba stone (chlorite schist), which is popular as a garden stone. In addition to the Prefectural Sakurayama Forest Park, which is home to the nationally designated natural monument Kanzakura cherry blossoms, and Sanbashiki Gorge, the area is also famous for the famous Joho-ji temple, the remains of the Yuzurihara Stone Age dwellings (a nationally designated historic site), Shimokubo Dam (Lake Kanna), which was completed in 1967, and Yashio Onsen.

群馬県南西部、多野郡(たのぐん)にあった旧町名（鬼石町(まち)）。現在は藤岡市(ふじおかし)の南部を占める地域。旧鬼石町は1889年（明治22）町制施行。1954年（昭和29）三波川(さんばがわ)村、美原(みはら)村と合併。2006年（平成18）藤岡市に編入。神流(かんな)川の典型的な谷口集落で、繭、屋根板などを扱い、3、8の日を市日とした市場町として発達。国道462号が東部から南部へと通じる。主産業は農業で、米、麦、コンニャクイモのほか、野菜、シイタケなどを産する。庭石として愛用される三波石(せき)（緑泥片岩）が特産。国指定天然記念物の寒桜(かんざくら)のある県立桜山森林公園や三波石峡のほか、名刹(めいさつ)浄法(じょうほう)寺、譲原(ゆずりはら)石器時代住居跡（国指定史跡）、1967年完成の下久保(しもくぼ)ダム（神流湖）、八塩(やしお)温泉は有名。
