...A thin, feeble-shaped perennial grass found under coniferous forests in the subalpine and cool temperate zones (illustration). The thin stems and leaves grow sparsely and in a clump, with a thin, short underground stem. The stem is 40-70 cm tall, thin and weak, and the base spreads slightly sideways. The leaves, one or two at the base and one at the top, are attached to the nodes of the stem, thin and linear, 10-20 cm long, 1-2 mm wide, slightly inward-curling, and sometimes sparsely hairy. In June and July, a panicle is produced, 5-8 cm long, slightly drooping at the tip, and bears 5-12 spikelets on thin, drooping branches, and is pale green with a purple tinge. ...
