…The relatively easy integration of the region into Prussia compared to the Rhineland was due to the fact that, since the 17th century, Brandenburg-Prussia had already acquired the counties of Mark and Ravensberg (1614), the bishopric of Minden (1648), the counties of Lingen and Tecklenburg (1702, 07), and the bishoprics of Münster and Paderborn (1803). However, even after the annexation to Prussia, regional traditions remained strong, and the peasantry in particular continued to maintain their introverted and conservative temperament, old customs, and language (Westfälisch, a variant of Low German).
