One-year volunteer soldier

...the training system for junior officers of the reserves of the former army. In 1883, a one-year volunteer system was established for graduates of public secondary schools and above who volunteered and paid for their own expenses while enlisted, shortening their active military service period from three years to one year. In 1889, the eligibility to volunteer was expanded to include private schools, and the reserve officers were promoted to non-commissioned officers while enlisted, and further appointed to reserve second lieutenants after in-service training and a final examination.
