An idea that abstracts the city of Rome, the mother of the Roman Empire, and sees in the name Rome a symbol of universal rule, eternity, civilization and order.
[The formation of the Roman idea]
The origins of the Roman ideal date back to the end of the Roman Republic. As early as the 2nd century BCE, worship of the goddess Rome, who was the deification of the city of Rome, began in the regions that came under Roman rule. Meanwhile, the expansion of Roman rule and the chaos at the end of the Republic created a sense of decline among the Romans themselves. For this reason, Augustus, who ended the chaos and established a state government, was all the more praised as the restorer of order, and it was under Augustus' rule that the Roman ideal experienced its first period of rise.

　ローマ理念の起源はローマ共和政末期にまでさかのぼる。すでに前2世紀，ローマの版図下に入った諸地方で，都市ローマを神格化した女神ローマRomaの礼拝が始まった。一方，ローマの支配の拡大と共和政末期の混乱は，ローマ人自身の間に没落観を生み出していた。それゆえいっそう，その混乱を終結させて元首政を樹立したアウグストゥスは秩序の再興者として称揚され，このアウグストゥス治下でローマ理念は最初の高揚期を迎えるのである。
