Donkey - Asse

Japanese:
Donkey - Asse

A poetry magazine. From April 1926 (Taisho 15) to May 1928 (Showa 3). 12 volumes in total. Editor and publisher: Kubokawa Tsurujiro, Miyagi Kikuo from issue 11 onwards. A coterie magazine founded by Nakano Shigeharu, Hori Tatsuo, Kubokawa, Nishizawa Ryuji, Miyagi, Hiraki Jiro and others who had gathered around Muro Saisei. The magazine name was suggested by Hori, and the title on the cover was written by Shimojima Kukoku, the haiku poet and personal doctor of Akutagawa Ryunosuke. While inheriting the good parts of traditional literature, the coexistence of Nakano, who would later take on revolutionary literature, and Hori, who would take on 20th century literature, occupied an important historical position among the coterie magazines from the end of the Taisho period to the beginning of the Showa period. In addition to Nakano's poem "Songs" and critique "A Few Fragments on Poetry," and Hori's translated poems and essays on Cocteau, Apollinaire, Francis Jamme, and others, Akutagawa, Hagiwara Sakutaro, Sato Haruo, and others also contributed through Saisei. Tajima (Sata) Ineko, a quasi-member of the group, also published poems. Nakano and the other members, except for Hori, later participated in revolutionary literature and movements. There is a reprint edition (1960, Institute of Modern Japanese Literature).
