A trade name for thiamine hydrochloride (vitamin B1 ). In 1910 (Meiji 43), Suzuki Umetaro isolated an active ingredient from rice bran that is necessary for the growth of animals and whose deficiency causes beriberi, and named it oryzanin after the Latin name for rice, oryza. This was the first discovery of a vitamin, and at almost the same time, Funk isolated a similar active ingredient and named it vitamin, which became a globally accepted name. It was released by Sankyo Co., Ltd. (now Daiichi Sankyo Co., Ltd.) in 1911.
