Yoshinao Otomo

Japanese:
Yoshinao Otomo

The ancestor of the Bungo Otomo clan. A powerful vassal in the early Kamakura period. His childhood name was Ichiboshimaru. He was Buzen no Kami. He was a Junior Fifth Rank. The Otomo Family Documents and other sources state that he was an illegitimate son of Minamoto no Yoritomo, but it is more appropriate to say that he was the son of Kondo Yoshishige, the governor of Sagami's Furusho district. His mother was the daughter of Hatano Shiro Tsuneie, and as his elder sister married Nakahara Chikayoshi, his nephew Yoshinao was adopted by Chikayoshi and inherited the governorship position of Otomo district, which was his mother's territory. He served as a close attendant to Minamoto no Yoritomo, inherited some of the authority of the Chinzei Bugyo (magistrate of the Chinzei region) held by his foster father, Nakahara Chikayoshi, and was given the position of land steward of Ono-no-sho in Bungo Province (Oita Prefecture), and his descendants became the guardians of Bungo Province for generations. He died in Kyoto on November 27, 1341.
