...The regions of al-Jazira and Butana, bordered by the Nile and the Atbara, are cotton-producing regions that are the core of the Sudanese economy and are well irrigated, and are the most densely populated areas. Both Kurdfān, on the west side of the White Nile, and Darfur, located further along the western border, are completely sandy wilderness, surrounded by the Nuba and Marra mountain ranges, respectively, and are mostly hilly and mountainous. However, during the rainy season, these areas are transformed into excellent pastureland and shrub forests, including acacia, from which gum arabic is harvested.

Darfur was originally the name of a region, where there was already a small kingdom ruled by the Kayra dynasty of the Negroid Fur people, but in the mid-17th century the Fur people became Islamic. The king at that time was Suleiman Solon, and this led to the kingdom becoming powerful, even ruling over the surrounding Arab nomads. This kingdom is now known as the Kingdom of Darfur. Its territory extended especially eastward, crossing the Nile to the Atbara River. …
