...In the records from the first year of the Kakei era (1387) at the nearby Yasaka Shrine, it appears that they performed the role of a ritual dance at the shrine. Nishitanaka was called Innaimura until the mid-Edo period, and from these records it is believed that the Kowaka dance was originally a dance performed by chanting masters who served local temples and shrines. The Kowaka school advanced to Kyoto in the mid-15th century, where it gained the patronage of military commanders and was granted land, and flourished under three branches: Hachirokuro, Kohachiro, and Yajiro. ...
