A volcanic island in the South Pacific, about 400 km north of Suva, the capital of Fiji. Area: 47 km2, population: 2,700 (1986). It was annexed by the British colony of Fiji in 1881, and is still administratively part of Fiji. However, unlike the Fijian people, who are Melanesian, the Rotumans are Polynesian, and this influence is strong in both their character and culture. Of the approximately 7,700 Rotumans, only about 2,700 remain on the island, with the majority having migrated to urban areas such as Suva (Viti Levu) or been born there.
