Sakae Akaiwa

Japanese:
Sakae Akaiwa

Christian thinker and pastor. Born in Ehime Prefecture. Studied under Tokutaro Takakura at Tokyo Theological Seminary. Pastored Uehara Church (now Yoyogi Uehara Church) and published the magazines "Gen" and "Shin." Before the war, he was devoted to Swiss Protestant theologian K. Barth, but after the war, he declared his membership in the Communist Party, claiming that Christianity and Communism can coexist because they are truths of different dimensions, namely faith and practice, and sparked controversy both at home and abroad. In his later years, he published "The Story of Christian Escape," in which he abandoned orthodox Christian faith and preached subjective fellowship with the human Jesus, raising sharp issues and criticizing Christianity from within.
