Aomori [city] - Aomori
Aomori is a city located in the center of Aomori Prefecture, occupying the Aomori Plain, the surrounding mountainous areas, and the eastern part of the Tsugaru Plain. It was incorporated as a city in 1898 and is the prefectural capital. The central city, facing Aomori Bay, developed as the port of the Tsugaru Domain. Since the Meiji period, the opening of the Seikan Ferry and the railway between Ueno and Aomori has made it a key transportation hub connecting Honshu and Hokkaido. Even now, after the Seikan Tunnel was opened in 1988 and the Seikan Ferry was abolished, the city remains a key transportation hub with the Tohoku Shinkansen, Hokkaido Shinkansen, Aoimori Railway, Ou Main Line, and Tsugaru Line, and Aomori Airport. It is also served by the Tohoku Expressway, Aomori Expressway, and National Route 7. It is also the administrative and economic center of the prefecture. Aomori Port is a commercial port with a 10,000-ton quay, and a base for coastal and deep-sea fishing. Local industries include lumber, seafood processing, and publishing and printing. Located in the east is Asamushi Onsen, in the west is the Sannai-Maruyama ruins, and in the southeast is Mt. Hakkoda and Sukayu, and it is part of the Towada-Hachimantai National Park. The annual Nebuta festival is famous as one of the three major festivals in the Tohoku region. The Tohoku Shinkansen opened to Shin-Aomori Station in December 2010, and the Hokkaido Shinkansen, which extends this line, opened to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto in March 2016. In April 2005, Namioka Town in Minamitsugaru District was incorporated into the city. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 824.61 km2 . 299,520 people (2010).
