〘Noun〙① A bell provided by the state to postal messengers under the ritsuryo system. The bell had notches determined by the rank of the messenger, which in turn regulated the number of postal horses provided. Postal messengers rang this bell when traveling. Postal bell. Uma-yaji no suzu. [Ryo Gikai ( 718)]② A lid rest for tea kettles, modelled on a station bell. ③ A bell rung to announce the departure of a train. *Article from Fuzoku Gaho, issue 200 (1899): "One five minutes past one in the afternoon. The station bell rang once. The train spewed black smoke and departed from the carriageway."
