A researcher of Japanese medieval history before the Second World War. Born in Kyoto. Graduated from the Faculty of Letters of Kyoto Imperial University in 1931 (Showa 6). He engaged in medieval history, particularly research on individual manors in the Toji domain, using documents from the Toji temple as historical materials. In his books such as "Japanese Medieval Villages" (1942) and "Land Relations in Ancient Times" (1943), he criticized the exaggeration of manors in previous research on medieval history, discussed the relative importance of provincial government lands, and argued that Japanese manors were not independent economic entities like manors in the West, and that villages existed separately as economic entities, which had a great influence on medieval history research after the war. In 1938, he was involved in the suppression of the "World Culture" group in Kyoto. He was conscripted in 1943 and was in the Kuril Islands when the war ended, but died of illness in Siberia in 1947 (Showa 22) while in captivity.
