…In 1905, he joined the Campbell Bannaman government as Lord Chancellor of the Board of Trade, and in 1908 as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Asquith government. In 1909, he proposed the groundbreaking People's Budget, which called for the wealthy to pay taxes to fund naval expansion and social policies, but was met with fierce opposition from Conservative landowners and aristocrats. When the House of Lords, which was dominated by Conservatives, rejected it, the government won two general elections the following year and passed the Parliament Act in 1911, which significantly reduced the power of the House of Lords. …
