An Icelandic chieftain and poet who lived from around 910 to 990. Born into a wealthy farming family, he was praised for his poetic talent from an early age, and at the age of 15 he went abroad and became famous as a Viking. His life is detailed in Egil's Saga. He left behind three long poems and over 40 short poems, including Ransom for a Head, set against the backdrop of a feud with the king; Sonatrek, which sings of the grief of a father who loses his children one after another; and a long poem lamenting the death of a close friend, making him the greatest medieval poet in Scandinavia.
