French author. His real name was Julien Viaud. As a naval officer, he visited many countries in Africa and the Orient, and also called at Japan three times. He wrote colorful, exotic novels based on what he saw and learned. His debut novels were Ajadée (1879) and Miss Chrysanthemum (1887).
