This old town occupies the middle reaches of the Yoshii River in the eastern Kibi Plateau in Kume District, Okayama Prefecture. It was once a mining town for the Yanahara Mine, Japan's largest producer of iron sulfide ore. It began operation in 1916 and was run by Dowa Mining. At its peak, it produced a quarter of the nation's total, but closed in 1991. The Katakami Railway was built to transport iron sulfide, but was abolished in 1991. There is little flat land, and most of the area is mountainous and hilly. Forest products are abundant. Tsukinowa Kofun is located in Ioka in the south. In March 2005, it merged with Chuo Town and Asahi Town in Kume District to become Misaki Town. 77.08 km2 . 6,966 people (2003). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
