Swinburne, Algernon Charles
Born: April 5, 1837, London
[Died] April 10, 1909, London. British poet. He was fascinated by Greek poetry at Oxford University, and was also familiar with Italian and French literature. He wrote many poems, but it was not until his Greek-style verse drama Atalanta in Calydon (1865) that he showed the maturity of his prosodic technique. His representative works include the pagan and sensual Poems and Ballads (3 volumes, 66-89), which shows his rebellion against British snobbism, and Songs Before Sunrise (71), which was inspired by the Italian independence movement. After Tristram of Lyonesse (82), a long poem of the most perfect technique, his creative ability declined. He also wrote tragedies, critiques of Shakespeare, Hugo, B. Johnson, and others, as well as essays on poetry and novels.
