Jones (1746-94) was appointed as a judge of the Calcutta High Court, and the following year, 1784, he founded the Asiatic Society of Bengal, laying the foundation for Indian studies, and the society's journal, Asiatic Researches, marked the first step in Indian studies. Also in 1784, Wilkins C. Wilkins (1749-1836), a secretary for the East India Company, published an English translation of the Bhagavad Gita, an important Hindu scripture. This was the first direct translation of the Sanskrit original into a modern Western language. …
