...Furthermore, as we internalize the gender roles expected of us by those around us at each stage of development, by the time we reach adolescence, we will have secondary sexual characteristics, puberty, menarche, and awareness of sexual urges (sexual desires), and will form and establish our self-identity as male or female. This psycho-sexual self-identity is called masculine identity (masculinity) or feminine identity (femininity), and is collectively called gender identity, which is to be distinguished from biological sex identity. The word sex does not only mean the difference between male and female, but also refers to the various phenomena that arise from the difference between male and female.
