…This is a style of stone carving art that flourished most in ancient times, especially during the Kushan and Gupta periods, and is one of the most important schools in India. It is centered around the ancient city of Mathura, located on the right bank of the Yamuna River, about 140 km south-southeast of New Delhi in northern India. With very few exceptions, all the stone used is red sandstone with yellow-white spots from nearby Sikri, and this unique quality of stone makes it easy to determine whether or not a work is from Mathura.
