This is dysentery." ② Refers to a severe form of dysentery in children, especially children between the ages of two and six, accompanied by symptoms of poisoning. It causes nervous system disorders such as pale face, cold hands and feet, cessation of pulse, convulsions, and confusion due to impaired blood circulation. It was designated a legal infectious disease under the Infectious Diseases Prevention Law, but was reclassified into a Class 4 infectious disease following the enforcement of the Infectious Diseases Law in 1999. 〘名〙① 下痢の症状が激しい流行性の伝染病。※全九集(1566頃)三「疫痢の説 一郡一庄一国など老少ともにはやり痢を病む。これ疫痢也」② 小児、とくに二~六歳の幼児の赤痢で、中毒症状を伴った重症型をいう。血液の循環障害による顔面蒼白、手足の冷え、脈搏の停止や、ひきつけ、意識混濁などの神経系の障害を起こす。伝染病予防法により法定伝染病に指定されていたが、平成一一年(一九九九)の感染症法の施行に伴い四類感染症に分類されている。小児劇症赤痢。※日本医学史(1904)〈富士川游〉「近時世人が之を疫痢と称するは古人が用ひし名にあらず」
