Girton College

...With the intervention of Parliament, the requirement to sign the Thirty-Nine Articles was abolished in 1971, and the university was finally opened to non-conformists. The administration of the university was democratized, the number of professors increased, and the university became more of a place of academic research than a place of training for clergy. Girton College was built in 1969 as a female-only college, and Newnham College in 1971. The number of students also increased due to reforms in the second half of the 19th century. With the large increase in state scholarships in 1920, the university became open to the children of the lower middle class and working people, and it was no longer an institution monopolized by the ruling elite as it had been in the past. ...
