A mining town in Norrbotten County in northern Sweden. It is the center of one of the world's largest iron mining regions. The nearby deposits are magnetite, containing 60-70% iron and 1-2% phosphorus. Large-scale open-cut mining is carried out, with an annual production of about 5 million tons. Most of the ore is transported by rail to the ice-free port of Narvik (Norway), and some to Lulea on the Gulf of Bothnia, for export to the UK, Germany, and other countries. Founded in 1899, it has developed significantly as a mining town since the railroad was extended from Gällivare, 60 km southeast. It was promoted to city status in 1908. In 1948, it annexed an area of more than 20,669 km2 , making it the largest administrative area in the world. Population: 26,174 (estimated 1992).
