A former town in Higashimuro District, southeastern Wakayama Prefecture. The main settlement is at the mouth of the Kozagawa River, and is on the Kisei Main Line. In addition to forestry such as growing seedlings, greenhouse horticulture is also carried out. The town has long prospered as a tuna fishing town in the Kumano Sea, but in recent years has engaged in netsuke fishing for abalone and spiny lobster. There is a sewing factory. 和歌山県南東部,東牟婁(ひがしむろ)郡の旧町。主集落は古座川河口にあり紀勢本線が通じる。苗木育成などの林業のほか,施設園芸も行う。古くから熊野灘マグロ漁業で栄えたが,近年はアワビ,イセエビなどの根付漁業を行っている。縫製工場がある。2005年4月串本町へ編入。46.00km2。5856人(2003)。
