Tanbayama [village] - Tabayama

Japanese: 丹波山[村] - たばやま

A village in Kitatsuru County, Yamanashi Prefecture. Population 981 (1995). Located at the northeastern edge of the prefecture, it borders Tokyo and Saitama Prefectures. The Tanba River flows east through the center, emptying into Lake Okutama at the eastern end. Mount Kumotori lies to the northeast and Mount Daibosatsu to the southeast. The village is surrounded by steep mountainous terrain, and 97% of the village is made up of forests, most of which are used to protect water resources for Tokyo. The main industries are agriculture and forestry, but apart from special products such as wasabi and mushrooms, other areas are sluggish. The entire area is part of Chichibu-Tama National Park, and there are scenic spots such as the Tanba Valley. [Hagiwara Tsuyoshi]

山梨県北都留（きたつる）郡の村。人口981(1995)。県の北東端に位置し，東京都と埼玉県に隣接する。中央部を丹波川が東流し，東端で奥多摩湖に注ぐ。北東に雲取山，南東に大菩薩嶺があり，周囲は険しい山地で，山林が村域の97％を占め，うち大半が東京都の水源涵養林となっている。農林業を主体とするが，ワサビ，キノコなどの特産があるほかは不振である。全域が秩父多摩国立公園に属し，丹波渓谷などの景勝地がある。【萩原毅】
