A Greek mythological story of an expedition and adventure. The Argonauts means the crew of the Argo ship. There are two other epics that remain, including the one by Apollonius of Rhodes from the Hellenistic period. In order to keep his nephew Jason, who is the rightful heir to the throne, away, Pelias, the king of Iolcos in Thessaly, promises to hand over the throne in exchange for the Golden Fleece found in Colchis on the Black Sea coast. With the guidance of Hera, Jason gathers heroes from all over Greece, boards the great, talking ship Argo built by the hero Argo, and sets sail for Colchis. Peleus, Theseus, Orpheus, and Hercules also accompany him. They have many adventures, including being pulled back by a storm, Hercules falling off at Chios, and defeating the monster birds Harpyai. They safely pass through the gap between the giant rocks that open and close at the entrance to the Black Sea and arrive at Colchis. With the help of the King of Colchis' daughter Medea, he solves his problem, finally obtains the Golden Fleece and sets off home.

ギリシア神話の遠征冒険物語。アルゴナウタイArgonautaiとは〈アルゴ船の乗組員〉の意。ヘレニズム時代のロドスのアポロニオスのものをはじめ，ほか２編の叙事詩が現存。テッサリアのイオルコス王ペリアスは正当な王位継承者である甥(おい)イアソンを遠ざけるため，黒海沿岸のコルキスにある金羊毛と引換えに王位を譲ると約束する。イアソンはヘラの導きで全ギリシアから英雄を集め，英雄アルゴスArgosが建造した物言う大船アルゴ船に乗り組み，コルキス目ざして出航する。ペレウス，テセウス，オルフェウス，ヘラクレスも同行する。嵐(あらし)に引き戻されたり，キオスでヘラクレスが脱落したり，怪鳥ハルピュアイを征伐するなど冒険を重ねる。黒海入口で開閉する巨岩の間を無事通過しコルキスに至る。コルキス王の難題をその娘メディアの助けで解決し，ついに金羊毛を手に入れ帰路につく。
