A part of music theory that considers the technique of orchestrating a musical idea, as well as the performance of the various instruments required for this, their acoustic relationships, the quality of the combinations, and how to handle musical phrases. The performance of instruments has changed significantly over the past 100 years, but today, examples are generally taken from works from the classical period onwards, and the characteristics, playing techniques, and range of the instruments are explained. Furthermore, the combination of various instruments and the contrast of timbre and volume are important parts of orchestration, and the question is how to use the orchestra to its maximum effect. Orchestration developed relatively recently, and famous books on orchestration by H. Berlioz, R. Strauss, and Rimsky-Korsakov are well known.
