The capital of the Puy-de-Dôme department in central France. It is the center of the tire industry and the headquarters of Michelin. Population: 140,000 (1990). Clermont, the former center of the Auvergne region built by the ancient Romans, and neighboring Montferrand, which originated in the 11th century, merged in 1630 to form Clermont-Ferrand. In the Middle Ages, it was a religious center and frequent venue for religious councils (Congress of Clermont). There are also many medieval religious buildings. The Church of Notre-Dame-du-Port is a typical example of 12th-century Auvergne Romanesque architecture. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
