The capital of the Puy-de-Dôme department in central France. It is the center of the tire industry and the headquarters of Michelin. Population: 140,000 (1990). Clermont, the former center of the Auvergne region built by the ancient Romans, and neighboring Montferrand, which originated in the 11th century, merged in 1630 to form Clermont-Ferrand. In the Middle Ages, it was a religious center and frequent venue for religious councils (Congress of Clermont). There are also many medieval religious buildings. The Church of Notre-Dame-du-Port is a typical example of 12th-century Auvergne Romanesque architecture.

フランス中部，ピュイ･ド･ドーム県の県都。タイヤ産業の中心地で，ミシュランの本社がある。人口14万(1990)。古代ローマ人が築いたオーベルニュ地方の旧中心地クレルモンClermontと，11世紀に起源をもつ隣接のモンフェランMontferrandとが，1630年合併してクレルモン･フェランとなった。中世には宗教の中心地で，宗教会議がたびたび開かれた(クレルモン会議)。中世の宗教建築も多い。ノートル･ダム･デュ･ポール教会は，12世紀のオーベルニュ派ロマネスク建築の典型。
