A record of beautiful young men in the early modern period

A reading book from the Edo period. Written by Kyokutei Bakin, with illustrations by Utagawa Kunisada, Iwakubo Hokukei, and Toyokuni III. 41 volumes and 45 books. The first volume was published in 1829 (Bunsei 12), the second volume in 1830, and the third volume in 1832 (Tenpo 3) by Osakaya Hanzo and Chojiya Heibei. The sequel, Shinkyoku Gyokuseki Dojikun, was published by Chojiya Heibei in 1845 (Koka 2), with the first and second volumes in 1846, the third and fourth volumes in 1847, and the sixth volume in 1848, but was left unfinished. Based on the Battle of Itsukushima, a famous historical event, the play portrays Sue Harukata, who killed his lord Ouchi Yoshitaka and was killed by Mori Motonari, as Sueakenosuke Harukata, the illicit son of Onatsu and Suose Juro, and Mori Motonari as Oe Morishiro Narikatsu, telling the tale of two boys, one good and one evil. Borrowing a concept from the Chinese Qing dynasty baichuan novel "Togotsukanpyo," the play brilliantly depicts human feelings and evil.

江戸時代の読本(よみほん)。曲亭馬琴(ばきん)作、歌川国貞(くにさだ)・岩窪(いわくぼ)北渓・3世豊国挿絵。41巻45冊。初輯(しょしゅう)は1829年（文政12）、2輯は30年、3輯は32年（天保3）に大坂屋半蔵と丁字屋(ちょうじや)平兵衛から刊行され、続編『新局玉石童子訓(しんきょくぎょくせきどうじくん)』は、初帙(しょちつ)、2帙が1845年（弘化2）、3帙、4帙が46年、5帙が47年、6帙が48年に丁字屋平兵衛から刊行されたが未完に終わる。正史に著名な厳島(いつくしま)合戦に取材し、主君大内義隆(よしたか)を弑(しい)し毛利元就(もうりもとなり)に滅ぼされた陶晴賢(すえはるかた)を、阿夏(おなつ)と陶瀬十郎との道ならぬ子末朱之介晴賢(すえあけのすけはるかた)とし、毛利元就を大江杜四郎成勝(もりしろうなりかつ)としてこれに配し、悪と善の2少年の伝をたてた。中国清(しん)代の白話(はくわ)小説『檮杌間評(とうごつかんびょう)』に構想を借り、人情と悪の描写に精彩を放っている。
