A stall set up by street vendors at night. Originally it referred to nighttime operations permitted in Yoshiwara, Edo in 1725 (Kyoho 10), but in the 19th century, it came to refer to stalls set up on roads, in the precincts of shrines and temples, and in front of gates at night by street vendors such as "hoshimise" in the Kyoto-Osaka region and "tentoboshi" in Edo. This was first seen in Osaka, and in Edo during the Bunsei era (1818-1830). Night stalls were controlled by incense sellers, and a wide variety of goods, both old and new, were sold. After the Meiji era, lighting was improved to acetylene and electric lights, and night stalls became more popular, but in modern times they are restricted to festivals, fairs, and specific locations. [Hikari Sasaki] Junkeicho is the old name of the area in Minamisenba, Chuo Ward, Osaka City, which is said to have been named after the residence of Tsutsui Junkei. During the Edo period, Junkeicho Street was the eastern passage to the neighboring Shinmachi red-light district, and was famous for the "Junkeicho Evening Market" and "Junkeicho Night Market."
