The capital of Värmland county in central Sweden. Population 76,000 (1990). In the Middle Ages, assemblies and markets were held here, and in 1584 Duke Karl (later Charles IX) granted it city privileges. In the 19th century, Sweden's leading cultural figures, such as Tegnér, Hjøjer, Freding, A. Fryxell, and FA Dahlgren, came from the city.
