Ambush at the Imperial Court

Japanese: 殿上闇討 - てんじょうのやみうち

The name of a Heike song. Hiramono. Taira Tadamori was allowed to enter the palace for the first time at the age of 36 for his achievement in building Tokuchoju-in Temple in response to the desire of Emperor Toba. The courtiers were displeased and planned to ambush Tadamori during the Gosechi festival. When Tadamori found out, he came to the palace wearing a large sword, and his retainer Iesada waited in a corner of the garden, so the ambush was not carried out. At the festival banquet, people sang "The bottle of Ise is a vinegar bottle" to make fun of Tadamori of the Ise Heike for having a squinting eye (Chuon, Shiyoju).

平曲の曲名。平物（ひらもの）。平忠盛は，鳥羽院の念願にこたえて得長寿院を造立した功により，36歳で初めて昇殿を許された。殿上人（てんじようびと）たちがそれを不快に思い，五節（ごせち）の豊明節会（とよのあかりのせちえ）のおりに忠盛を闇討ちにしようと計画した。それを知った忠盛は大きな太刀を帯びて参内し，また郎等の家貞が庭前の片隅に控えたりしたので，闇討ちは実行されなかった。節会の宴で，人々は〈伊勢の瓶子（へいし）は酢瓶（すがめ）なりけり〉と歌って，伊勢平氏の忠盛が眇目（すがめ）(斜視)であることをからかった(〈中音（ちゆうおん）･初重（しよじゆう）〉)。
